Reflections on Body, Mind & Spirit: Taking your health inventory, rethinking healthcare, and choosing how we respond
My October Reflection
October sky. Filled with many colors and light and darkness, it’s perfect - beyond our control. We can view its beauty and its changes. Leaves fall. The wind blows. And so it goes. Things can change quickly beyond our control. A country at peace can be engaged in war at the snap of the fingers. What can we do about the outcome? Some things are beyond our control…we can control how we respond.
Body - Take Inventory on Your Health Investment
Last month I took a page from Admiral Bob Harward to "invest in yourself" and treat your body like the most important asset and investment you have. For some that may conger up ideas of having to do extreme exercise every day. I'm taking a step back and evaluating all what I asked of my body this summer, namely, much repetitive motion with the golf swing. I'm giving myself permission to pause, recover, and give thoughtful consideration to how to best serve and invest in myself during the coming winter months.
Challenge for you:
Are you investing in your body, mind, and spirit? Take a page from the Admiral's book and invest in your health. Do it TODAY.
Mind - Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity (Rethinking Medicine to Live Better Longer)
As I give attention to prioritizing recovery, I’m evaluating the next step in my health investment. Enter Dr. Peter Attia and his new book, Outlive. Along with great explanation of our current and ideal healthcare scenario, Dr. Petter Attia provides valuable information to living better. This book is a lengthy, well-written "manifesto for living better longer...Dr. Attia's aim is less to tell you what to do, and more to help you learn how to think about long-term health in order to create the best plan for you as an individual..."
In the coming months, two areas of his book I”m paying particular attention to are VO2 Max and Zone 2 Training…stay tuned…
Challenge for you:
Is there a book that will help you on your health journey that you’ve been meaning to read? Pick it up and start reading (and implementing) it TODAY.
Spirit - The Winds May Howl…
Author and podcast host, Mike Duncan, was recently interviewed on the Daily Stoic. He was asked why does Stoicism reappear just when we seem to need it the most? Duncan's response was epic. He said: Anytime the world starts to feel like it’s being engulfed by entropy, chaos and noisy disunity, the mind naturally seeks out something that offers cohesion, order, and quiet unity. We can get carried away by events and certainly feel our passions leading us into behavior that we might upon reflection regret. Stoicism offers a solid place to plant your feet and say the winds may howl but I will not be swept away (emphasis mine).
Certainly next week's elections are on people's minds. Also perhaps, war, chaos, and uncertainty around the globe. Let us remember we can only control how we respond. The winds may howl but I will not be swept away...
Challenge for you:
Do you have something in your life right now that is difficult? How are you choosing to respond?
Quote I'm Reflecting Upon
"Between stimulus and response lies a space. In that space lie our freedom and power to choose a response. In our response lies our growth and happiness." ~ Victor Frankl
To your reflection and health,
Lisa Schaffer
